Transferring Your Existing Number

Transferring your number to another phone company is known in the industry as Local Number Portability (LNP). This process enables subscribers in the United States to transfer their existing telephone number (traditional or Internet-based, but wireless is often not available) from one phone service provider to another. With NuTel, you can request that your number be “ported” during the initial order process or even after you have become a subscriber, providing the conditions of transfer are met.

When you port your number, you will be notified by e-mail as to the status, each time there is a change. Although NuTel tries to work with all service providers across the United States, certain local or regional guidelines may restrict us from being able to port your number. In such cases, a new number would be provided. The process can take between 6 and 8 weeks to complete, although it is often completed in less time. This transfer time can be dramatically reduced when all forms are correctly filled out with accurate information. During the porting process, you will be provided with a temporary phone number. You can cancel this temporary number after your existing number ports, or you may keep it as a second line (subject to rates in effect). After your number has ported, your old phone service should be turned off. However, you may want to contact your old phone company to confirm they have disconnected service.

Please be sure to follow these instructions carefully. Missing or incomplete documents, or failure to follow porting procedures will delay, or possibly prevent, the transfer of your number .

Please note:

We do not recommend moving or "porting" your existing number immediately. We cannot guarantee that your existing provider will allow us to obtain your number quickly, or even at all as they are not required to do so by law. Delays may be experienced in selecting this option. We recommend that if you really need to keep your existing number, that you make this request to Customer Care 30 to 60 days after your product is installed and working to your complete satisfaction.

Transfer Requirements

1.    The number you wish to transfer must be active with your local provider.
2.    If the number is on a line that has DSL service, that service will terminate upon transfer.
3.    If "Distinctive Ring" is on the line, it must be removed before transfer can occur.
4.    Lines associated with CENTREX or ISDN accounts will not transfer.
5.    An open order for new services with your present phone company will stop the transfer.
